Meet Olivia Chantecaille, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Chantecaille

Introduce yourself!

I’m Olivia Chantecaille, Creative Director and Co-Founder of Chantecaille. I was born into the beauty world—my mother and co-founder, Sylvie, is an amazing pioneer in the world of beauty and philanthropy and she has created three very innovative cosmetic companies far ahead of their time. When I was younger, I moved to Europe to study art and to model, which taught me a lot of valuable lessons not only about makeup, but about skin and how important ingredients are.

Chantecaille creates healthy, luxurious products based on natural ingredients with powerful results. We were the first brand to offer skincare based on botanicals and makeup with skincare benefits.. Our makeup incorporated many of the same ingredients that were found in our skincare. It was very innovative at the time—today it has become more mainstream, but when we launched, that concept and type of makeup formulas just didn't exist.

I am so lucky to truly love my job — I get to work with my family and the most amazing teams on public relations, social media, product development, trends, and my favorite—conservation. When I’m not in the office, you can find me with my daughter Delphina, outside enjoying nature.

As the Creative Director of Chantecaille, what’s your favorite part of the day?

I love that every day is totally different. One day might be spent meeting with labs to look at new botanical ingredients and clean formulas or looking at the runways in Paris, considering upcoming trends for makeup, and the next day might be a zoom call with our conservation partners, discussing how we can best help get enough milk formula for all the baby orphan elephants, or how we can better prevent the poaching of pangolins. And then there are always the fun days where I get to shoot in the studio with my brother, Philippe, days full of energy and inspiration. But my favorite part of the day is coming home to my daughter, Delphina, and our pets!

What projects most inspire you?

I’d say that the most inspiring, and important to me, is the health of the earth and its animals — our conservation partners are incredibly, passionate, innovative and forward thinking and teach me so much about how we can all thrive in harmony on this planet. There is a dynamic cycle of connecting people to people, connecting people to causes, to new things, to new places, and to themselves in a really beautiful way, and saving the planet, and preserving it for generations to come, is so crucial.

What advice would you give your younger self when first starting out in your career?

Trust your instinct, always!

What does self-care mean to you and how do you practice it?

It’s important to remember that beauty comes from inside—our products are amazing, but if you’re not taking care of yourself and finding joy in your every day, it shows. Self-care is striving for a healthy balance — getting enough sleep, drinking lots of water and eating nourishing food. The most important thing I can teach my daughter, Delphina, is the lesson of self-love — which I think is paramount, and a big part of self-care. Positivity is important - practicing saying I love you in the mirror is a good place to start!

Where do you draw inspiration from?

I find inspiration in many things: In no particular order: nature, flowers, animals, women, my daughter, joy, beauty, and laughter.

What are you most looking forward to in the second half of 2022?

So much! We hope to be able to spend more time traveling and visiting with our conservation partners that we support. Our family is very passionate about conservation and we work arm and arm with our partners. We get to know each of them personally, and they become our dear friends, such as Angela Sheldrick and Max Graham, so it's important to us to help them on the front lines of conservation. It's so valuable to meet with them, see what they are working on, and discuss in person how we can make a bigger impact in their important work. There is so much you can learn, feel and see in person, and you feel so much more connected especially to the animals and the wild. Seeing the progress and the animals in person is deeply rewarding. It also gets us thinking about new collections!

What draws you to the Mestiza brand?

The classic, elegant silhouettes — and the beautiful fabrics. I love floral details and this dress in particular has a beautiful laser cut lace floral detail. But also, Mestiza’s thoughtful partnership with the Habi Philippine Textile Council to source handwoven textiles and sustain local female artisans is something I really appreciate and applaud.

Where are you wearing your Mestiza piece and how are you styling it?

I will be wearing this beautiful dress this summer — I can’t wait for evenings outdoors in the garden and the ease of wearing a beautiful dress that can be dressed up with heels or worn barefoot for an al fresco meal! I recently moved, and can’t wait to entertain in our new backyard. My mother, Sylvie, celebrates her birthday in July every year with a festive birthday dinner and this will be the perfect dress for it. I will pair it with my Walters Faith x Olivia Chantecaille pieces that launch in June. The collection celebrates my love of timeless fine jewelry and the ocean and is inspired by our signature pebble compacts. We have bejeweled them with blue sapphires and green emeralds as an ode to the sea and they also support WildAid. I love to layer the locket pendants, and then mix the sapphire bands in with my vintage rings for an accent of ocean-esque color. In the summertime I also live in Castaner sandals—you'll often find me in their classic espadrille. For me, summer is freedom and ease, so I love a bag that emulates that feeling. I will pair a sustainable Stella McCartney clutch with my Mestiza dress. I complete my look with a swipe of our Lip Veil shade Moabi- infused with Fair Wild Baobab and in support of Space for Giants.

Any notes on how your Mestiza piece makes you feel?
Feminine and confident. I always feel like myself in their frocks.
